ReplyDelete- Object: Electric Guitar
- Visual Description of Object: Slim neck typically made of wood, containing cuts for steel "frets" that delineate positions of tones; Often-rounded bodies containing electrical components; nickel/steel strings running through the body until held down at "tuners" at the head which can be adjusted to different pitches.
- How do you plan to analyze your object?
[i.e. what style do you use in writing about your object? what analytic approaches do you take (historic, aesthetic/artistic, discursive/textual)?]
I plan on taking a predominantly historical approach, and inserting physics and math-based definitions and descriptions of the electrical phenomena that is so important to understanding the electric guitar.
- What article (please name the author and title of the article) from your course reading reflects a style of writing or analytic approach that you would like to use in writing about your own object?
[i.e. what article inspires you through writing style, method or methodological approach, etc.?]
Given the level of technical detail I'm going to be giving, I don't think any of the writing approaches we've seen in class are similar.
- Describe your experience with your research so far? How is it going? What challenges are coming up for you? Have you found the articles you will be referencing in your paper? If so, what are they and what work are they doing?
I've been researching the electric guitar for about 10 years, so I haven't really run into any significant challenges. I have found some articles, including "Manufacturing is a high note for aluminum guitar maker (2008), Machine Design". It describes alternate materials for building guitars, in this case aluminum.
- Please write a draft of your first paragraph here. Even if you have not yet written this, please use this as a space to play with the opening paragraph.
The electric guitar is an ever-evolving, amorphous instrument which has made and broken the careers of decades of musicians and stars. In its modern form, it is modifiable, hackable, and capable of sonic feats we might have never imagined. In this piece, we will explore the history of the instrument, with emphasis on its acoustic older brother, and then move into the realm of physics and circuits, where we'll discuss the true nature of the electric guitar, and all that it is capable of.

ReplyDelete- Object: Keys
- Visual Description of Object: A modern day key typically fits in the palm of one’s hand, however keys were not always this compact. Todays keys are generally made of metal and consist of a central body from which a longer, more slender piece of metal extends. On this extended segment there is a pattern of grooves and peaks that precisely lines up with the inside of a lock mechanism.
- How do you plan to analyze your object?
[i.e. what style do you use in writing about your object? what analytic approaches do you take (historic, aesthetic/artistic, discursive/textual)?]
I would like to analyze my object as it progresses through time via the demands of the consumer. For example, we don’t make large skeleton keys anymore because we now lock up many things (bikes, houses, cars, lockers, etc.), and it would be impractical to carry around several large, bulky keys. When keys were first made it was acceptable to use large keys because people probably only had one or two.
- What article (please name the author and title of the article) from your course reading reflects a style of writing or analytic approach that you would like to use in writing about your own object?
[i.e. what article inspires you through writing style, method or methodological approach, etc.?]
I would like to use the writing style that Eames Demetrios uses in “Eames Chairs: A 30-Year Flash (Part I).” I, too, would like to describe the key as it evolves through time and how its development was largely shaped by while societal influences at different points throughout history.
- Describe your experience with your research so far? How is it going? What challenges are coming up for you? Have you found the articles you will be referencing in your paper? If so, what are they and what work are they doing?
I haven’t gotten very far in the research process for my paper. One problem I have encountered so far is reading the jargon associated with lock and key making. I am unfamiliar with the terminology used to describe the engineering of the key so sometimes it takes me awhile to understand what the writer is saying. I have used a combination of sources including some that focus on history, and some that focus on lock and key mechanics.
- Please write a draft of your first paragraph here. Even if you have not yet written this, please use this as a space to play with the opening paragraph.
Many people will hide away their most valuable possessions behind the protection of one very simple, everyday object- the key. Today, most of us carry multiple keys for the entire day and don’t think about the number of times we pull them out for different purposes. Keys have become so essential in our day-to-day lives that forgetting them can quickly prevent your day from going on; if you lock your keys in the house you can’t start your car and if you lock your keys in your car you can’t get into your house. As you can see it is nearly impossible to discuss the key without also mentioning its co-mechanism, the lock. The first key ever invented only slightly resembles the key that we know and use today. Over time, the role of the key in society and our dependence on it has drastically increased. To account for the increase in key usage parallel to the rise of consumer markets, I will investigate how the key has evolved due to the demands of the consumer prior to the 18th century, the mid-19th century to early 20th-century under the lens of modernism, and in the modern day alluding to advancements that are soon to come.

ReplyDelete“Chalk”
Description:
Chalk is a white, powdery substance composed of limestone that is mined, compacted, and colored for use on sidewalks, on blackboards, and in landfills.
How I plan to Analyze:
When writing about chalk, I use an expository writing style that combines scientific and historical facts, news, and statistics to analyze and convey the relationship chalk has with American society and global ecological and economic relationships.
Article Inspiration:
The article I will use as an example for my style of research and writing is Chapter Two, “The Telephone in America” of America Calling: A Social History of the Telephone to 1940 by Claude Fischer. This article functions effectively through figures, quantified data, and the use of a historical, chronological order of events to convey the history and impact of the telephone.
Research Update:
As far as my research has been going on “Chalk,” it was slow-going at first due to a few issues. Firstly, the core content of a source can be hard to uncover when it is thirty pages or more and contains no abstract or initial summary or appears in disjointed fragments. Secondly, the intentions of some articles have sometimes rendered data useless due to a lack of relevant, non-politicized, unbiased information. And lastly, the sheer quantity of articles that pertain to a wide range of applications of chalk have made it difficult to pinpoint articles of use to me and the aspects of chalk I want to research. Nonetheless I have found some articles I am fairly positive I will use in my paper because of the scientific backgrounds, historical chronologies, and application to modern-day American and global economies. They are as follows: “Geoconservation and the advancement of geosciences: lessons from the Chalk of England” by Rory Mortimore, “Top 10 Chalk Exporting Countries” by World Atlas, and “United States Chalk Reel and Line Chalk Market Report 2017” by QYResearch Group.
Practice Intro Paragraph:
When children draw flowers and hopscotch on the concrete or professors delineate complicated calculus problems on the blackboard, chances are they are unaware that the chalk they use to do these things is really a microscopic graveyard. Chalk, a white or light yellow powdery substance, is a sedimentary rock composed of calcareous limestone derived from tiny plankton from the Mesozoic Era. For two hundred years, its been mined from oceanic deposits around the world for its application in landfill filling, the classroom, and especially art, which can be traced back to prehistoric cave drawings. Although it’s helpful in these areas and a popular commodity, chalk has drawn several controversies over its mining and the associated environmental impact and loss of stratigraphic information for geologic research. In order to better understand chalk’s role in revolutionizing teaching techniques, boosting global economies, and impact on the planet, I will be researching chalk as a naturally occurring, highly manufactured item and its associated history.

ReplyDelete- Object: Piano
- Visual Description of Object: The piano is a relatively large string instrument and is traditionally black in color. It has a keyboard consisting of glossy black and white keys.
- How do you plan to analyze your object?
-I plan to analyze my object through an artistic lens while researching the history behind the object and what goes into making it. I will take into consideration the handcraftsmanship as well as the mass production of the piano. I will probably talk about relevant string instruments that inspired the invention of the piano and then walk the reader through the different innovations of the piano throughout history. I will likely use famous pianists in my discussion of the piano and discuss how the piano influenced various composers.
- What article (please name the author and title of the article) from your course reading reflects a style of writing or analytic approach that you would like to use in writing about your own object?
-The article whose writing approach inspires me for this research paper is “Humanizing Modernism: the Crafts, ‘Functioning Decoration’ and the Eamses”. This paper focuses on how the craft and design of the Eames chair played a significant role in the production of modern furniture. I plan on writing about the influence that the piano and its craft has had on the music industry and how it gave rise to other famous instruments and styles of music that are well known today.
- Describe your experience with your research so far? How is it going? What challenges are coming up for you? Have you found the articles you will be referencing in your paper? If so, what are they and what work are they doing?
-So far, the challenges I have faced in researching my object is the fact the piano is very well known and there are plenty of resources to choose from – almost too many. I need to figure out a way to narrow my topic of pianos and focus on a single theme surrounding the piano. I also need to decide whether I will include digital pianos in my discussion since they are very common now but are produced quite differently than the traditional acoustic piano. I have found some articles that I will be referencing in my paper that mostly focus on the creation of the piano, and the influence behind its invention. Some articles I have found include “History of the Piano” by Pianonet, and “The Making of a Piano: Behind the Scenes at Klavierhaus” by Joan Baum.
- Please write a draft of your first paragraph here. Even if you have not yet written this, please use this as a space to play with the opening paragraph.
- The dynamic sound that emulates out of a piano can move you to tranquility. It’s smooth, melodic tones have inspired generations of music. This relatively large string instrument includes an array of glossy black and white keys that produce a sound when touched. Aside from its unique sound, the piano has transformed the way instruments are constructed with its eloquent structural detail. The piano has traveled through time and space, leaving its indent on people all over the world. This grand instrument has withstood the pressures of time and has continued to flourish in the name of music. In this paper, I plan to investigate the inspiration behind its creation while going over key innovations through time and how it transformed the music industry.

ReplyDelete- Object: Home Video Game Console
- Visual Description of Object: A device generally connected to a television that allows the user to consume interactive media
- How do you plan to analyze your object?
[i.e. what style do you use in writing about your object? what analytic approaches do you take (historic, aesthetic/artistic, discursive/textual)?] I plan to look at the historic progression of technology and how competition led to an "arms race" of evolving generations of consoles.
- What article (please name the author and title of the article) from your course reading reflects a style of writing or analytic approach that you would like to use in writing about your own object?
[i.e. what article inspires you through writing style, method or methodological approach, etc.?]
I plan to use a similar approach as the Eames chair article (Eames Demetrios "Eames Chairs: a 30 year flash (Part 1)", as I'm using a historical approach that wants to look at the progression of a product over a limited span of time. This is very similar to the Eames chair analysis.
- Describe your experience with your research so far? How is it going? What challenges are coming up for you? Have you found the articles you will be referencing in your paper? If so, what are they and what work are they doing? The largest challenge I've had with research is that the relative recency of the industry has made it so that there are fewer in depth articles on the subject, and those that exist tend to be mixed and influenced by the current development of the time. That being said, it's also an advantage that marketing and development stories of each generation are generally well documented and easy to access.
- Please write a draft of your first paragraph here. Even if you have not yet written this, please use this as a space to play with the opening paragraph.
When William Higinbotham created Tennis for Two, a simple tennis game on a cathode ray tube that he had been using to calculate wind trajectories, he likely did not realize he was standing at the start of a multibillion dollar industry that would reshape media. Over the next half-century, companies would race to be the first to unveil new technologies in their consoles and entice customers to jump ship to their brand. The inherently incompatible nature of different companies products and generations of technology posed an interesting challenge in how companies would be forced to relaunch entire lines of products in order to keep pace with the technology, creating a generational model of industry that many other industries follow today.

ReplyDelete-Object: Light Bulb
-Visual Description of Object: A glass bubble with wire filaments inside that emits light when heated by electricity. the bubble comes in different shapes, and the wire could contain different compounds that fluorescent when an electric current is applied through them.
- How I plan to Analyze:
I am thinking of talking about how the light bulb has changed throughout the years, and how it comes in different shapes. how it had evolved, and the different functions it has. as well some history behind of how it became the light bulb, and had helped with industrialization.
-Article Inspiration:
The article I will use as an example for my style of research and writing is “The Telephone in America” of America Calling: A Social History of the Telephone to 1940 by Claude Fischer. This article functions effectively because it uses historical data in chronological order of events to convey the history and impact of the telephone in many different ways.
- Describe your experience with your research so far? How is it going? What challenges are coming up for you? Have you found the articles you will be referencing in your paper? If so, what are they and what work are they doing?
My experience with my research so far has been ok, since there is a lot of information about light bulb history, but since it is such an specific object its hard to condense all the information given. Which makes me think ab lot about the articles i will be using. I haven't really pick any articles yet, but i had read a few of them related to the light bulb.
-Please write a draft of your first paragraph here. Even if you have not yet written this, please use this as a space to play with the opening paragraph.
Ever wonder how artificial light became something we use on our everyday life? how is it that something simple light the light bub became something that is essential for all of us? The light bulb was first produced by Thomas Alva Edison in Ohio on 1847, and its now a mass produced object that it is trans nationally used Nowadays the light bulb has become something that is essential in many countries and places. Making is production to increase over the years. Now, the light bulb is something that is mass produced, and it comes in many different shapes and colors. Yet its purpose is the same to illuminate things in the dark for use to be able to see things.

ReplyDeleteObject: Pants Pockets
Visual Description: An opening attached to pants around the waist area. Generally they blend in with the rest of the pants are nor particularly noticeable.
How do you plan to analyze your object?
I think I would like to take a more historical approach to the object. I want to analyze how they were first used and how we got the pockets that we have today. I want to analyze it's progression or lack thereof. I also want to look into women's pants and how there are large discrepancies between the genders in the pants industry, particularly with the pockets.
What article (please name the author and title of the article) from your course reading reflects a style of writing or analytic approach that you would like to use in writing about your own object?
I would like to do an approach similar to that of "Is the Honeycrisp Apple Engineered to Fail?". I like that this article includes there own personal experience with the object and then goes on to talk about the history and the future of the object. I would like to do something similar with my paper, because I don't just want to talk about the history of pockets, but also to look at where we can possibly change things or think about if things will ever change.
Describe your experience with your research so far? How is it going? What challenges are coming up for you? Have you found the articles you will be referencing in your paper? If so, what are they and what work are they doing?
I have had a very hard time with research so far. Pants pockets are very specific, so I have yet to come across a source that I would like to use.
Please write a draft of your first paragraph here. Even if you have not yet written this, please use this as a space to play with the opening paragraph.
Pants pockets are such a useful everyday object that we often forget about them, unless of course they aren't there. I've always taken my pockets for granted, until the recent trend by clothing manufacturers of often removing the pockets from women's pants, pockets that were already too small to begin with. I will look at the societal and gender barriers between pockets and analyze the history for how this pocket discrepancy formed.

ReplyDeleteThe object I have chosen for my research paper is the orange. Oranges are juicy citrus fruits that are spherical in shape and have a yellow-orange peel. I plan to analyze my object by using an historical approach. I plan to briefly discuss the origin of the orange and how it spread across the globe. I will also analyze the growth of American orange groves and variations of oranges. Additionally I will research how orange products like orange juice became a staple item in American breakfast. John Seabrook’s writing style and methodology in “Crunch,” inspires my own research. I am still in the early stages of my research. I still need to narrow down my list of articles. The articles that I have found so far discuss the history of commercial orange juice, especially how it was used as vitamin C supplements during World War II and how the US government was deeply involved with the marketing of oranges.
Have you ever given the orange much thought when walking in to your local grocery store? Have you ever considered its origin or the science behind it? Have you ever wondered how orange products like commercial orange juice made it to the American breakfast table? To answer these questions I will trace the origins of the orange and the birth of the American orange industry. I will investigate how oranges are grown and processed. I will also investigate the history of commercial orange juice and how it has changed over time.

- How do you plan to analyze your object?
[i.e. what style do you use in writing about your object? what analytic approaches do you take (historic, aesthetic/artistic, discursive/textual)?]
I plan to analyze it in terms of the cultural changes that came about because of its invention. This means looking into the change in behavior people had with others from different parts of the world, now that they could listen to foreign sounds.
- What article (please name the author and title of the article) from your course reading reflects a style of writing or analytic approach that you would like to use in writing about your own object?
[i.e. what article inspires you through writing style, method or methodological approach, etc.?]
The "Lawn and Landscape" article by Ted Steinberg is the sort of writing I will most likely end up following, because it analyzes global consequences of an object's introduction into the world.
- Describe your experience with your research so far? How is it going? What challenges are coming up for you? Have you found the articles you will be referencing in your paper? If so, what are they and what work are they doing?
To be honest, I have not started researching that carefully yet. Mostly, I have found general information on wikipedia which has gotten me thinking about what I might look into as a next step. I have not found any exact articles yet, and perhaps the biggest issue I am facing is writing about a fairly obscure sociological topic may not have many concrete resources or data.
- Please write a draft of your first paragraph here. Even if you have not yet written this, please use this as a space to play with the opening paragraph.
Photography changed the world because its mechanism and realism transported people out of their everyday lives. It is likely audio recordings have had a similar effect. Although music has been played for longer than anyone knows, it was only within the last two centuries that music has been sonically captured to be (with varying success) reproduced at a later time and in a different setting. Like a photograph, hearing a recording lets one momentarily leave their surroundings to be part of a "foreign" event (I need to come up with a term shorter than spatially+temporally separated). As the world's sounds became increasingly present in everyone's life, and maybe more importantly because it became possible to capture sound from anywhere, I assert the global interest in each other's culture and lifestyle increased. (However that can be measured...)

[i.e. what style do you use in writing about your object? what analytic approaches do you take (historic, aesthetic/artistic, discursive/textual)?] I plan to take on an approach that describes the relationship between the object and Nationalism and how the meaning of the flag has changed throughout American history.
- What article (please name the author and title of the article) from your course reading reflects a style of writing or analytic approach that you would like to use in writing about your own object?
[i.e. what article inspires you through writing style, method or methodological approach, etc.?] The article I plan on shaping my writing style after would be closest to Mark Kurlansky and his chapters on the Cod fish, as it monitors the objects progression and uses throughout history.
- Describe your experience with your research so far? How is it going? What challenges are coming up for you? Have you found the articles you will be referencing in your paper? If so, what are they and what work are they doing? Research for my object is still underway though the sources I've come across look promising. The biggest challenge I have faced would have to narrowing down the sources that I know will work for me, since there is more content available on the object than I have anticipated.

The American Flag is an everyday object most Americans find themselves familiar with at a young age. Whether it was on their front porch, in their classroom, or on the baseball field it's more than likely most Americans are familiar with the shape and design of the American flag. Originally hand crafted by Betsy Ross in June of 1777, the flag has a special place in our society for over two centuries. However, the flag has not always taken on the same role and it's symbol is used in various ways. I plan to discuss how the shift and use of the American flag changes under certain circumstances of Nationalism.

ReplyDeleteObject: Airplane
Visual Description of Object:
- An airplane usually has 2-4 engines. Its shape is inspired by the shape of birds to maximize the aerodynamic aspect when operates.
- The outside paints can vary between different airlines/ goods carriers, but typically has a series of identification number on it for classification purpose.
How do you plan to analyze your object?
- So far, I decided to focus on 4 things:
o The two main materials that are used to build airplane: the traditional aluminum material and the increasingly use of carbon fiber on modern planes recently.
o How the development of airplane contributes to the circulation of other daily objects surrounding us. How airplane helps these objects to become “cosmopolitan” (e.g: a bouquet of flowers can consist of many different types of flowers from different countries thanks to the aircraft invention)?
o How the development of airplane contributes to the rate of diffusions of cultures and beliefs around the worlds (via making it easier for people to travel to other countries). This can be a type of food, clothing styles or a clarification of a misunderstanding about some aspects (the people and living style) of a country.
o How airplane can be used to differentiate the people of different socio classes of the society. This will touch on:
The dramatic increase in the private ownerships of airplanes in Asian countries.
And airline companies are working hard on distinguishing the quality that customers can get between economy, business and first-class tickets.
What article (please name the author and title of the article) from your course reading reflects a style of writing or analytic approach that you would like to use in writing about your own object?
- I will borrow some of the examples from “Flower Power”, written by Amy Steward to show how airplane helps an object become “cosmopolitan”.
- I will use a writing style that is similar to Ted Steinberg in “Lawn and Landscape in World Context, 1945-2000,” when I talk about how aluminum has made the flying dream of human comes true.
- I will use a writing style that is similar to Claude S. Fischer in “America Calling: A Social History of the Telephone to 1940” to talk about how the use of airplane has changed overtime by different socio economics classes in society.
Describe your experience with your research so far? How is it going? What challenges are coming up for you? Have you found the articles you will be referencing in your paper? If so, what are they and what work are they doing?
- There are several big challenges that I am currently facing in this research project. To start with, most of the research articles on plane are mainly analyzing the physics aspect of the object (e.g: how the shape of an airplane wings is built for aerodynamics). I need to spend a very long time on reading individual papers. Furthermore, there is a limited number of aspects of the airplane that I can focus on given the length of the research paper.

ReplyDeleteThere is no doubt that airplane has revolutionized the way objects in our daily life circulated around the world. In fact, it plays a significant role as a catalyst to promote trade in this era of globalization; according to the International Air Transportation Association (IATA), there are around 50 million tons of good that are transported by air each year, and this averages out to roughly 140,000 tons daily (IATA). Furthermore, the annual value of these goods is approximately $6.4 trillion, which is equivalent to 35% of the value of items that are traded internationally (IATA). This is a remarkable figure because just 100 years ago, the only method that is available for transportation of goods and passengers, between countries which are disconnected by the sea, is shipping. Next, aviation provides over 57 million jobs and contributes $2.2 trillion to the global economic activity annually (IATA). This is a bold evidence showing us how an object around us can have such transnational influence on the standard of living and quality of life of people. On top of all, the development of airplane is one of the key factors that enable many of the objects that we have learned so far to be “cosmopolitan”. For instance, without the help of air transportation, the red rose growth in Ecuador would not be able to be part of the gorgeous flower bouquet that you purchase for your mom during the Mother’s Day (lecture on the flower). Through this research paper, I would like to analyze the impact of airplane on our society nowadays from the view point of an economist.

- Describe your experience with your research so far? How is it going? What challenges are coming up for you? Have you found the articles you will be referencing in your paper? If so, what are they and what work are they doing?
My research has mostly consisted on the origins of the clock and its various forms, but I still have not found an article that would help me support my specific claims.

There is a common idea that it takes great and complex innovations in order to transform society, but the simplest objects can have just as much effects to our lives. To prove this, I will use the electrical clock as a subject of study to show the various influences it has in the lives of millions. It molds our interactions, the way we spend our days, and dictates the notion of time itself.
Thesis: The electrical clock influences the social behaviors and expresses an authority as being the conduit of a universal constant: time.

ReplyDeleteObject: The Bracelet
Description: The bracelet is an accessory that comes in many shapes, styles, materials, and colors. Each style carries different symbolisms and meanings that accentuate the owner to some extent. Back then, most bracelets were associated with femininity and delicacy. However, nowadays, the bracelet is arguably a gender neutral object.
How do you plan to analyze your object?
The analytic approaches that I chose are historic and textual. Firstly, I will detail the origins and emergence of accessories in general, in particular, the bracelets. Also, in order to enrich and expand my research, I will include detailed information about the gender issues surrounding the bracelet. I will analyze the social, historical, and economic factors that influenced the transition of the bracelets in terms of gender. Secondly, I will use the textual approach to explore the transnational aspect of the bracelet by focusing on their emerging as local accessories to a universal concept. I will include examples of specific types of bracelets such as the charmed bracelet, the gold bracelet, and the silver bracelet.
What article (please name the author and title of the article) from your course reading reflects a style of writing or analytic approach that you would like to use in writing about your own object?
The article “Eames Chairs: A 30-Year Flash (Part I)” by Eames Demetrios reflects the writing style that I would like to use. This is because the article follows a chronological order, therefore, it is easy to follow in my personal opinion. This is important in terms of locating a lot of historical information into one part. Therefore, the readers would be able to follow the history of the bracelets while at the same time being able to stay focused on the gender issues around the objects.
Describe your experience with your research so far? How is it going? What challenges are coming up for you? Have you found the articles you will be referencing in your paper? If so, what are they and what work are they doing?
My research process has been challenging so far. This is because most of the time I am unable to find reliable and trustworthy sources from professions or scholars. Most of the resources that discuss the history of bracelets are magazines and news media sites. There is a lack of research journals and articles that discuss this object. Therefore, this influenced my research approach to be about gender studies in order to further enrich the depth. The articles that I have found so far are “Bracelet” by the Harry Wachenheimer, “The Bracelet Creases” by Ramesh Chaube and R. S, and “A Colonial Silver Bracelet From The Citico Site” by Orlenas L. Rice, JR. These articles discuss the history and production of the bracelets. The article “The Bracelet Creases” explores the history of bracelets in general while the others explore that of different types of bracelets. Therefore, I will use them to get background information to prevent bias.
Please write a draft of your first paragraph here. Even if you have not yet written this, please use this as a space to play with the opening paragraph.
What do your bracelets tell about you? What meanings do your bracelets symbolize? How much history do your bracelets carry in them? Similar to the mirror, the jewelry that wraps around your wrist reflects a lot of you, perhaps more than you can ever imagine. The bracelet is timeless. Its history to be traced back to many years ahead while its collection of transitional concepts is one of the most popular ones in the modern world now because of its symbolism for beauty, intricate structure, and playful design. One of the transnational concepts includes the issues of gender associated with the bracelet’s symbolisms. As a result, this gives rise to my thesis statement. This essay will explore to what extent do socially constructed values and beliefs in a society shape the meanings of the bracelets?

ReplyDeleteObject: Nail Polish
Description: Nail Polish is a chemical substance as a bypass of paint which is used to tint nails that comes in a variety of colors, shapes, and brands. In ancient types, the color of nail polish distinguished the ruling class from the general population as a symbol of social order. Nowadays, nail polish is used as a form of identity by everyone on the basis of colors and designs.
- What article (please name the author and title of the article) from your course reading reflects a style of writing or analytic approach that you would like to use in writing about your own object?
[i.e. what article inspires you through writing style, method or methodological approach, etc.?]
I plan to analyze my object on the basis of a specific company [Revlon or Cutex] and how it became mass produced since the 1920s. In order to go further in depth into my research, I will analyze the advertisements that promoted nail polish in that time frame and compare them to how they're advertised today.
- Describe your experience with your research so far? How is it going? What challenges are coming up for you? Have you found the articles you will be referencing in your paper? If so, what are they and what work are they doing?
So far my research hasn't been as significant as id like it it to be because I haven't been successful in finding extensive articles on the basis of the origins and history of nail polish. Most of the scholarly articles have to do with the effects that nail polish can cause. Also, another challenge has been most of the things that I have found that contribute to the origins of nail polish have all been found on websites from google that appear to be blog posts or other forms of modern websites. One of the articles that I will be using extensively in my paper is Forde, K. “Celluloid Dreams: The Marketing of Cutex in America, 1916 1935.” which goes into detail into the mass production of Cutex.
- Please write a draft of your first paragraph here. Even if you have not yet written this, please use this as a space to play with the opening paragraph.
** The first paragraph includes: a first sentence that hooks the reader, naming the object right away, providing a little background on what the object is, perhaps some pertinent general and introductory writing on the object, and finally a thesis or argument statement that comes at the end of the first paragraph. The thesis is where you present how and in what ways you will analyze your object. You can use the first person in this paper, as YOU are the one crafting the argument of this paper and it is coming from your own ideas and research.
Nail polish is that fun decoration that has all the elements of style, identity, and mood in America. Early on, nail polish was said to have originated in China in 3000 B.C. where it was used to distinguish royalty. This led to the early 1900s, where companies like Cutex and Revlon modified the formula of paint used by the automobile industry to create a nail polish which shaped the way we buy and produce nail polish in contemporary America. These innovations led to the popularization of nail polish as it was targeted towards women in advertisements around the 1920s and 30s enticing them to match their nails with their lipsticks and picking colors that would please their husbands. The whole evolution of nail polish has ties related to looking at the relationships between the initial nail tinting to machine-made nail polish today.

ReplyDeleteObject: Doc Martens
Visual Description of Object: Doc Martens are chunky boots, trimmed with yellow stitching and often associated with alternative subcultures. Styles in the shoe vary but the classic style is the 1461 Doc Marten.
How do you plan to analyze your object?: I want to focus specifically on how the shoe became representative of subcultures that carry anti-establishment values, despite initially gaining popularity for the use of policemen and factory workers in 1960.
- What article (please name the author and title of the article) from your course reading reflects a style of writing or analytic approach that you would like to use in writing about your own object?: The writing style that I would like to emulate is Eames Demetrios’ “Eames Chairs: A 30-year Flash (Part I)”. I feel like with this style I’d be able to clearly address Doc Martens relationship to society and its historical representation.
Describe your experience with your research so far? How is it going? What challenges are coming up for you? Have you found the articles you will be referencing in your paper? If so, what are they and what work are they doing?: Research so far hasn’t been so difficult because the Doc Martens company is pretty prideful of their history so articles have been easy to find. At first I gained a general understanding of the historical significance and journey of the shoe through youtube videos, and then I looked more into the articles. The article I will be using in reference to the most is “ The History of Dr. Martens” which is published by the official Doc Martens website.
- Please write a draft of your first paragraph here. Even if you have not yet written this, please use this as a space to play with the opening paragraph:
Doc Martens are chunky boots, trimmed with yellow stitching and often associated with alternative subcultures. The idea for the shoe came from a man named Claus Marten. Originally, the shoe was largely seen on Policemen and factory workers. Progressively, British subcultures (such as skinheads) adopted the shoe to symbolize pride among the working class. Due to the shoes anti-establishment values, subculture in the seventies and eighties began to wear the shoe (subcultures such as goth, punk, new wave, etc.).

ReplyDeleteObject: Teddy Bear
Visual Description of Object: A bear shaped children’s toy made from soft or furry material.
How do you plan to analyze your object?: I want to focus on the history, business expansion of teddy bears, and its growing significance in child development
What article (please name the author and title of the article) from your course reading reflects a style of writing or analytic approach that you would like to use in writing about your own object?
I am not sure, which style of writing I want to approach, I want to write a paper that is engaging, I want it to be almost story-like, not just listing a bunch of facts together. I know which articles do not want to reflect Claude S. Fischer, America Calling: A Social History of the Telephone to because I felt it was a little too much information at once, to the point I was unable to know what I was reading. I really enjoyed Kurlansky’s Cod: A Biography of the Fish That Changed the World because it kept my attention, and it was the story of the cod.
Describe your experience with your research so far? How is it going? What challenges are coming up for you? Have you found the articles you will be referencing in your paper? If so, what are they and what work are they doing?
It is difficult to find reliable sources, there are a lot of information about the teddy bear, but it is difficult to tell whether the information is accurate when the author of the article is missing, or the date of publication is not written. There was plenty of information about the history of the teddy bear, it seemed pretty standard through all the information I was going through. When it comes to the little details on what materials was used and what company did what, it required more extensive digging, and questioning whether the information was accurate. For teddy bears being significant in a child’s development, there is a ton of information, and I want to use all of it, but my trouble is getting the good info and leaving out the useless..

It is surprising to know that teddy bears have only been around for about 100 years. Since its emergence in 1902 it instantly took the world by storm. By 1906 the teddy bear craze was in full swing, and ever since then the teddy bear has become an essential toy for children from all over the world. I will not only discuss the historical and business significant, but I also will connect it to human development. How the teddy bear can be significant role in a child's development.

ReplyDeleteObject: Microphone
Visual description: The microphone can assume various forms, but usually looks like a handle with a audio receiver on one end.
How do I plan to analyze my object: I am writing in a primarily academic style, using big descriptive words when I can. However I don't want to be too dry so I am including occasional bits of dramatic or flowery (in a good way) language. By the end of the process of writing this paper I plan to have analyzed this object from as many levels as possible, for anything less would be insufficient. This means history, aesthetics, related objects (like the telephone, record player, radio, cellphones etc.), an analysis of how a microphone works technically, what technological, cultural, and artistic innovations the microphone has led too, etc. This object will prompt rich discussion through all these lenses.
Relevant article from curriculum: Claude S. Fischers' "America Calling: A Social History of the Telephone" is a good model to work from because the telephone is a very similar device, and Fischer's book is a good model for a decent depiction of such an object's history. Not only that but the excerpt from this book we read for class includes valuable information to my subject as well.
Status of research: My research is going very well. I feel particularly motivated to complete this essay as soon as possible because I have many other projects inside and outside of school I need to complete by the end of the quarter. I also feel general motivation to for this project because the microphone is inherently very interesting. I have yet to run into a real challenge. As I mentioned, this subject inspires research and discussion from many levels so I am not concerned by a lack of material to write about. Here are some links to sources I have studied so far:

As well as the book 'Emile Berliner: Maker of the Microphone' from the Shields Library.
The above list of sources have given me good specific information prompted by my initial readings of relevant wikipedia articles.
Thesis paragraph as it currently stands:
It is quite fascinating how one invention can instigate a deeply impactful domino effect in human history. When one thinks of the most important innovations that mankind has come up with, one logically might think about the wheel, currency, the lightbulb, the compass etc. Seldom might the microphone be one of these first thoughts, but it should be. After the microphone’s inception, the ways in which history is recorded, and thus shaped, were forever changed. The ways in which music is introduced into society, and thus the ways in which it could grow would be greatly enlightened after the realization of this device. The microphone, in all of its glorious forms, has prompted tremendous ripples of innovation, culture, and possibility in our history.

- Visual Description of Object: An object which is used to tell time, it can be commonly found digitally or round with 12 numbers and two hands used to tell time.
- How do you plan to analyze your object?
I plan to analyze my object by historically and culturally.I want to know when and which clock was used and which became the first universal clock.
- What article (please name the author and title of the article) from your course reading reflects a style of writing or analytic approach that you would like to use in writing about your own object?
[i.e. what article inspires you through writing style, method or methodological approach, etc.?]
I would like to write similar to Pat Kirkham in "Humanizing Modernism: The Crafts, 'Functioning Decoration' and the Eamesses." But both articles on the Eamesses chair is fine because I want to explain how the clock is made and how it has become a necessity.
- Describe your experience with your research so far? How is it going? What challenges are coming up for you? Have you found the articles you will be referencing in your paper? If so, what are they and what work are they doing?
So far I have gone through one article and got a lot of the foundation for my paper. The challenge I am having right now is finding another article which is useful for my approach on the object. The first link is a short video giving the definition to a term which is used to explain the way clocks worked.

How many times a day do you check the time? Would you say once, twice, maybe ten times? No matter how many times you check, the first thing you look to, to see the time is a clock. A clock is a device used for measuring time in hours and minutes. The clock as object has evolved and bears many forms from the sundial to the ever first mechanical clock. Without the clock life as we know it would have been radically changed, with no way to organize, everything would be a live for the moment. You cannot plan for tomorrow because you do not know what time your tomorrow would begin. In order to demonstrate the importance of the clock I will justify how the clock has a huge cultural influence due to its function, which is the very foundation of society.
